Lean-Software-Transformation: CAx-Systems as enabler for Industry 4.0

In the course of Industry 4.0 productions get more and more flexible and due to self-optimizing cyber physical systems always improving. Planners, workers and machines must get more flexible to implement the constantly changing requirements. Therefore the planning with Industry 4.0 gets so complex that the relations can no longer be determined without planning software as technical tool for production chains. This flexibility requires a deep and broad know how and furthermore a software to support the user to handle the function variety of CAx systems just in time on demand. But exactly that is the main problem which forms the basis of this research project.

Based on the high complexity of these systems the application requires a high degree of expert knowledge and operating errors cause effects on the entire value chain. The target of this project is the development of methods for the next generation of Industry 4.0-able CAx software for the control of highly complex production processes which enables to handle technological complexity by "lean" configured surfaces.

The implementation is made in an interdisciplinary team of CAx system manufacturers, their suppliers, users of the production industry and experts for technology communication. Results are: Strong CAx systems for Industry 4.0 due to lean configured interfaces, verified, transferable methods, tool for the evaluation/optimization of the interaction interfaces of CAx systems.

AdaptCAD

Adaptation of 3D CAD models by machine and process data

In the production of industrial workpieces in the real production always occur deviations compared with the CAD model. In spite of partially large inaccuracies following processes are not executed with the actual component geometry but with the CAD model. This is the reason why the production process is often not optimally  planned. Inefficient processing times or a higher rate of rejects are the consequence.

The research project AdaptCAD deals with this problem and its solution. Target is to determine the produced workpiece geometry without measuring by continuous position data acquisition of the production axes of a machine tool and to adapt the CAD model of the workpiece accordingly based on this. This would allow a reliable planning of the process chain and reduce the rate of rejects. consequently costs and resources can be saved. Due to the high adaptivity of the solution a production in small lots is possible at first attempt and so allows the production of individualised products. An otherwise necessary geometry acquisition with a measuring step can be omitted.
